I'm referencing how we as Black people for whom the legacy of slavery has stripped much of our personal connections to Africa, and wanting to feel that we are part of a noble, wealthy, and powerful heritage, cling to Egypt, around which much study of the continent has focused and with which Western society has been largely preoccupied. Lacking other more tangible connections, Egypt Is an easy entry point to feeling like we have a legacy that predates slavery, even if most of us aren't Egyptian at all. That fact Is of course premised on the historical relative disinterest in other African societies and cultures that modern historians seem to perpetuate. In aligning ourselves with Egypt, even though I totally get why we do it, we are aligning ourselves with what the dominant society finds fascinating, not our true lineage.
